Sukhothai Kingdom , former kingdom, north-central Thailand . It was founded in the mid-13th century when a local Tai rulers led an uprising against Khmer rule. It remained a small local power until its third ruler, Ramkhamhaeng , the kingdom c inherited . 1279. He extended his power in the south to the Malay Peninsula , in the west to today's Myanmar (Burma) and to the northeast to today's Laos . After his death in 1298 the kingdom began to lose its power and in 1438 it was merged into the kingdom Ayutthaya included .
