Jaintia , in Indian history a state in Assam in the northeast India , extending from what is now the northern border between Bangladesh and India across the Jaintia Hills to the Kalong River in the Assam Plains. The people were Khasi origin.
When Myanmar (Burma) invaded Assam in 1824, the Raja allied with the British, who annexed his territory in 1832. Bengali traders and European tea planters moved in, creating tension that led to a rebellion in 1862. This was suppressed in a campaign that led to critique on the severity of the British authorities in India.
