Battle map - All battles in world history

The map was prepared on the basis of the Wikipedia database and information, specifically Wikidata and DBpedia. Wikipedia collects all kinds of historical information, including those related to battles and armed conflicts. Many of the Wikipedia articles, in addition to information about the event, also have the exact location given in the form of geographic coordinates. The map makers decided to take advantage of this fact. They pulled out for each event:the name of the battle, its exact date and location. All the information collected, i.e. over 12 thousand. battles, they put on the map with the following graphics.

Controversy and comments

Unfortunately, the creators of the map did not avoid many mistakes. This is due to the extremely difficult matter of world history and military conflicts. First, Wikipedia itself has many bugs that have naturally been transferred to the map. Secondly, the process of creating and extracting data was fully automatic, and this resulted in a number of different types of mistakes. For example, one battle is marked on the map as being fought in 1969, actually taking place in 69 CE. Third, some of the errors arose at the semantic level of Wikipedia articles. And these are bizarre errors! For example, one battle that took place in Berlin in 1990 is marked on the map. The slot machine got it wrong and took the German feature film World War III as a real event! Convergence of names. Fourth, the map lacks a number of different types of events, e.g. there are no fights for Westerplatte and the Warsaw Uprising. Although there are Wikipedia articles about these events, the machine has overlooked them. And finally, fifthly, Wikipedia, as a website created in the field of Western culture, presents mainly a Western perspective of looking at the history of the world. A perspective where the center of gravity of events is in Europe. In contrast, many events are omitted in East Asia and the Americas from pre-Columbus.

Despite this, as someone rightly pointed out in a heated discussion on Reddit, publicly available data produced by communities can be extremely interesting and valuable. The authors of the map also declare that they corrected errors.
