he Nieuport 11 is undoubtedly one of the biplanes that marked the aviation the most during the First World War.
It was actually a smaller Nieuport 10, and more efficient. It was not a real biplane but a sesquiplane (meaning the upper wing has twice the area of the lower wing). It is his small size that was responsible for his nickname "Baby".
This plane flew remarkably well and was very agile. On the other hand, its weak points was its upper wing which had a tendency to break under the effort and the difficulty of changing the magazine of 27 cartridges of the Hotchkiss or Lewis machine gun mounted above the upper wing.
It was powered by an 80 hp Le Rhône engine. It should be noted that some Nieuport 11 were also armed with 8 Le Prieur rockets fixed on the interplane masts.
It was delivered for the first time on January 5, 1916 and quickly returned to the Allies air supremacy against the Fokker "Eindekker".
