Married at the age of 17 to Count Walewski, almost in his seventies, Marie Walewska dreams of seeing Poland reborn from its ashes and believes she is serving this noble cause by eventually agreeing to become the mistress of Napoleon, during his stay in Warsaw in 1806. She had a son, Count Alexandre Walewski. At first resigned to this affair, Marie quickly became attached to the Emperor, whom she even went to visit on the island of Elba.
