Edward Pellew

Edward Pellew, born in Dover in 1757, died in 1833, 1st Viscount of Exmouth, was a British admiral.


He distinguished himself in several battles against the French navy in America and in India, became rear-admiral in 1804, vice-admiral in 1808. In 1815 he was given command of the British fleet in the Mediterranean. He bombarded Algiers and forced the dey to hand him over 1,000 slaves. He devoted the rest of his career to the instruction of sailors.
