Hamas X Fatah

With the arrival of Hamas to power in 2006, and the appointment of a prime minister of the party, the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) was isolated internationally. The European Union and the United States have suspended financial aid of 1 billion dollars annually, which represents almost half of the ANP's budget. Thus, the Palestinian government was left without resources even to pay the salaries of its employees.

In order to convince the European Union and the United States to suspend the boycott, the president of the ANP and Fatah member Mahamoud Abbas proposed the formation of a collision government, forcing Hamas to accept the conditions imposed by Israel to return to the negotiations.

At the end of 2006, the president threatened to dissolve Parliament and bring forward the elections, the last straw for the glass to overflow. Bloody conflicts began between those who supported Fatah and Hamas. Clashes that left 75 people dead in the first 2 months alone.

Abbas and Prime Minister Hanyieh signed the Mecca Accord in February 2007, which, at least temporarily, put a stop to the conflict. However, in July of the same year, Abbas ended the government of national unity, led by Hamas, after the radicals had taken control of the region.
