It is with great sadness that we announce the recent death of Professor Gheorghe I. Cantacuzino and his wife, due to a traffic accident. In our recent issue of Desperta Ferro Antigua y Medieval #54:Vlad Tepes. Dracula We had the immense pleasure of having an article by Professor Cantacuzino about Wallachian fortifications in the 15th century, which, unfortunately, was one of the last in his long career. Testimony of his tireless professional activity and of a life devoted to knowledge, Cantacuzino was an archaeologist, medievalist historian and passionate museographer, a person of great erudition and invaluable human quality. He was born in 1937 in Bucharest, studied Ancient History and Archeology and, in 1977, obtained a doctorate in Medieval History. Among many other scientific activities, he worked as an archaeologist at the Directorate of Historical Monuments of Romania, then an inspector, also a museographer at various museums in the country and a researcher at the "Vasile Pârvan" Archeology Institute. His work focused on the analysis of the monuments and, in particular, the fortifications of Romania during the Middle Ages. It is also worth noting that Professor Cantacuzino was a direct descendant of Şerban Cantacuzène, Prince of Wallachia between 1678 and 1688, descendant in turn of the Byzantine Emperor John VI Cantacuzino (reg. 1347-54).
