One of the most well-known Canadian survivors of the Holocaust is Leo Bretholz. Bretholz, who was born in Poland, was captured by the Nazis in 1942 and sent to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. He survived the camp and was liberated by Soviet troops in 1945. After the war, Bretholz immigrated to Canada and became a prominent human rights activist and educator.
Another notable Canadian Holocaust survivor is Samuel Bronfman. Bronfman, who was born in Russia, immigrated to Canada with his family in 1899. He became a successful businessman and philanthropist and eventually served as president of the Canadian Jewish Congress. During World War II, Bronfman was actively involved in efforts to rescue Jews from Nazi-occupied Europe. He also helped to establish the Jewish Brigade, which was a military unit that fought alongside the British army in the Middle East.
In total, it is estimated that there were around 1,000 Canadian citizens who were imprisoned in German concentration camps during World War II. Of these, approximately 600 survived the war. These survivors played an important role in raising awareness of the Holocaust and in helping to ensure that such atrocities never happen again.
