What is the Masstricht Treaty?

The Maastricht Treaty

- Also known as the Treaty on European Union (TEU)

- Came into force on 1st November 1993

- Created the European Union (EU)

- Established a single European currency, the euro

- Set out the criteria for EU membership (the Maastricht criteria)

- Established a common foreign and security policy (CFSP)

- Created the European Central Bank (ECB)

The Maastricht Treaty is considered to be one of the most important treaties in the history of the European Union. It laid the foundation for the further integration of Europe and created the framework for the EU's common currency, the euro.
