History of Europe

What did Louis xiv dislike?

Religious toleration. Louis XIV was a devout Catholic and believed that France should be a Catholic nation. He revoked the Edict of Nantes, which had granted religious freedom to Protestants, and persecuted Huguenots.

Aristocratic privileges. Louis XIV believed that the king should have absolute power and that the aristocracy should be subordinate to him. He curtailed the power of the nobles and made them more dependent on the crown.

Criticism of his policies. Louis XIV did not tolerate dissent and punished anyone who criticized his policies. He established a system of censorship and suppressed freedom of speech.

Luxury and extravagance. Louis XIV lived a life of luxury and extravagance. He built the magnificent Palace of Versailles and spent lavishly on court entertainments. This extravagance led to financial problems and contributed to the French Revolution.
