History of Europe

Which European country ruled over India and what year?

Great Britain ruled over India for almost two hundred years, from the mid 18th century until 1947, when India gained its independence.

The British East India Company, a trading company, took control of the administration of most of India in the mid 18th century, after the Mughal Empire had declined.

In the early 19th century, the company was abolished and the British government assumed direct control of the country.

India became an official British colony in 1858 and remained as such until its independence in 1947.
