What was the European currency before euro?

The European currency before the euro varied from country to country. Some of the currencies that were replaced by the euro include:

* German Mark (DEM)

* French Franc (FRF)

* Italian Lira (ITL)

* Spanish Peseta (ESP)

* Portuguese Escudo (PTE)

* Dutch Guilder (NLG)

* Belgian Franc (BEF)

* Luxembourg Franc (LUF)

* Irish Punt (IEP)

* Finnish Markka (FIM)

* Austrian Schilling (ATS)

* Greek Drachma (GRD)

These currencies were phased out and replaced by the euro on January 1, 1999, for electronic transactions and on January 1, 2002, for cash transactions.
