How did Estates-General become the national assembly of France?

* Representative advisory assembly summoned occasionally by French kings

* Met last time in 1614 before 1789

* First estate: Clergy

* Second estate: Nobility

* Third estate: Commoners

* Each estate had one vote regardless of how many representatives it had

* Called by Louis XVI to approve new tax laws

* Third estate outnumbered first two estates and wanted reforms for a more egalitarian society

* They declared themselves the National Assembly

* Elected the members (except first two estates)

* Drafted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen

* Marked the beginning of the French Revolution
