What does the name Josef mean?

Josef or Joseph is a biblical masculine given name. The English name originated in the 12th century, and is derived from the Old French language, Josep. The Old French name originated from the Latin name Iosephus, which is a Latinisation of the Greek name Ἰωσήφ (Ioseph), a variation of the Hebrew name יוֹסֵף (Yosef), via the intermediary of Aramaic. The name Yōsēf is traditionally said to mean "he will add", but some modern biblical scholars consider this unlikely. Instead, the name may come from the Egyptian word "Yosef-el" meaning "may God give life". The name is mentioned in the Book of Genesis in the Bible where Joseph is the eleventh and favourite son of Jacob and Rachel, and the younger brother of Benjamin. He is also the husband of Asenath and father of Manasseh and Ephraim.
