History of Europe

What was a crusade?

A crusade was a holy war between Christians and Muslims fought from 1095 to 1291. Christian pilgrims made religious journeys to visit the grave of Jesus at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Some Muslim rulers in the region were tolerant of religious freedom and pilgrims and some were not. Christian Europeans took up arms on several campaigns from France and England to regain territory in the Holy Land and open Jerusalem to pilgrims.
