What does equal protection under the law mean?

The Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution guarantees equal protection under the law to all citizens. It prevents the government from discriminating against any citizen on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, or other protected characteristic. This means that the government must treat all citizens the same, regardless of their race, color, religion, sex, national origin, or other protected characteristic. The Equal Protection Clause also prevents the government from creating any laws or policies that discriminate against any protected group.
