Schlieffen Plan

- Rapidly defeat France (6 weeks)

- Use large encirclement maneuver by moving through neutral Belgium

- Turn south against France

Problems

- Underestimated ability of Belgium and Britain to resist

- Overestimated speed with which Germany could mobilize

Result

- Failure; Germany and France bogged down in trench warfare

Later Strategy

- Submarine warfare would cut off British supplies

- Unrestricted submarine warfare brought U.S. into the war
