Catherine of Aragon, Henry VIII's first wife, was first married to Henry's older brother, Arthur. Arthur died shortly after the marriage, and Henry inherited the throne. Henry and Catherine were married soon after. The marriage produced one surviving child, Mary. However, Henry became unhappy with the lack of a male heir and began to have affairs.
In the early 1530s, Henry sought an annulment of his marriage to Catherine so he could marry his mistress, Anne Boleyn. The annulment was granted by Archbishop Thomas Cranmer, and Henry married Anne in 1533. Catherine was sent into exile, where she lived until her death in 1533.
