Why was Franz Ferdinand assassinated before World War 1?

Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, was assassinated on 28 June 1914 in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina (formally annexed by Austria-Hungary in 1908), by a Bosnian Serb student, Gavrilo Princip. The assassination was a defining event that led to the outbreak of World War I.
