History of Europe

What was reaction to the Holocaust?

The reaction to the Holocaust was one of revulsion, mourning, and outrage. Jews around the world and non-Jews in many countries reacted similarly: with sympathy for the millions killed, an appreciation of the severity of the tragedy, and the need for action. For a while, anti-semitism had greatly receded.

Many governments and international organizations condemned the actions of the Nazis and took steps to provide relief and assistance to the survivors. The war crime trials also contributed to the understanding of the scale of the atrocities and resulted in many convictions and punishments for some responsible for organising and implementing the Holocaust.

Overall, the reaction to the Holocaust was characterised by the recognition of it as a uniquely dark and abhorrent episode in human history.
