Retired German diplomat Wolfgang Schultheiss, who was ambassador to Greece from 2005 to 2010, spoke about Greece at an event in Germany. The most interesting point of his speech concerns the issue of war reparations.
"The Germans are never going to pay. First, we don't have enough money. The Greeks demand as much as a public budget from the German government. It is about 4,000 Euros per inhabitant. No government that wants to be re-elected is going to do it. Then the Poles would come and ask for not 300 but 900 billion euros.
"It's a barrel without a bottom" he boldly declares, although he recognizes the great moral debt of his country. But he urges the Greeks to ask for money related to the future and not the past. As, for example, is the case with the Greek-German Youth Foundation. There they will always find a listening ear, he concludes.
