In the period 1946-47 one of the goals or utopias of the leadership of the KKE and the later Democratic Army of Greece (DSE) concerned the internal collapse of the "monarcho-fascist regime" through erosion and the army, approx. but it happened in the Middle East with the failed movements there.
"... So the time will soon come when... we will have outflanked the fascist army, if in the meantime we don't disband it or even make it ours, which is the most likely", said Kostas Karagiorgis , high-ranking member of the KKE and "general", head of the KGANE (General Headquarters of Southern Greece).
This certainty came from the fact that there were nuclei within the Greek Army who in the violence of his reconstruction joined the ranks of everyone.
In the units of the B' Army Corps (SS) and especially in the 41st and 42nd Infantry Brigade of the IX Infantry Division (MP) and in the 21st TxPZ of II MP , communist nuclei were detected, according to official figures at least.
The goal of the KKE was the dissolution or the unionization of as many men as possible of the formations in question, a fact that would have catalytic consequences for the development of the entire war.
However, the conspiratorial movements were perceived by some officers who informed the hierarchy and thus the 2nd SS took its measures.
At the beginning of June 1946, a letter from a soldier privy to the conspiracy was discovered which spoke of an imminent stop. There is a dark spot here. The initiated soldier sent the letter to his parents. But could he not have known that the letter would be censored and therefore read?
Was he a fool, or was the letter simply the occasion to strike the blow at the communist cores within the Communist Party? However, in any case, organizations existed at least in the 41st TXPZ , headed by the soldier Stefanos Manakas , the later "Captain Stefos", commander of the DSE cavalry.
In the 41st Infantry Division, a communist nucleus seems to have been created when the brigade was still based in Kozani, before it was transferred to Trikala. Manaka's plan called for a communist uprising in the brigade on the night of June 19-20, 1946, based on a predetermined slogan.
The rebels would neutralize law-abiding officers and soldiers by disarming them and killing those who were now "dangerous" to the "people's movement" . At the same time, friendly citizens close to the KKE would join the rebels, along with armed groups.
Just the seizure of the brigade's armament would be a valuable gift to the rebels. The plan predicted that by the morning of June 20, the city of Trikala would also be under their control with the ultimate goal of creating a "free area" in Thessaly.
According to the official history of the Greek Army, similar attitudes would be manifested, on the same night, in the 42nd and 21st TXPZ. If this plan was indeed implemented, the whole of Thessaly would come under the control of the rebels with a single blow, with developments incalculable in history.
However, being aware of the conspiracy the 2nd SS intervened actively and with a "reaction", on June 16, neutralized the nuclei by surprise. Over 300 were arrested as directly involved with the stand. Another 1,500 men were disarmed as suspects. Manakas, however, escaped.
Interrogations and additional arrests followed in other units of the Greek Army. However, the discovery and suppression of the rebel movement had another strong consequence, the creation of the Makronissos camp...
