The III Mountain Brigade (3rd EOT) was formed after the self-dissolution of the other two Greek brigades of the Army of the Middle East, after the shameful movement of April 4, 1944.
The III EOT, together with the Holy Company, were the only Greek military units that fought against the Germans, on the side of the Allies. The Holy Society, in fact, continued to fight until May 8, 1945 and the German capitulation.
III EOT had the honor to be transferred to Italy. It arrived at the ancient Greek port of Taranto, on August 11, 1944, with colonel Thrasyvoulos Tsakalotos in command. Gradually the III EOT was pushed north and on August 18, 1944 it found itself south of the German "Gothic" line, initially under the 2nd New Zealand Division.
The Greek warriors, from the moment they set foot in Italy, decided to take their "revenge" from the Italians, because of whom Greece was dragged into the vortex of the Second World War.
At every opportunity the Greek divisions marched with their war flag at the head, performing a flag display on enemy territory! At the same time, the Greeks did not miss an opportunity to sing, in front of the Italians, the famous "Koroido Mussolini".
At the same time, however, the Greeks, officers and soldiers, distributed even their rations to the hungry Italians, especially to the children, who were approaching their camp! A few days later, "with a smile on her face", III EOT marched towards Rimini. There he won immortal glory, capturing the city and forcing the German garrison to surrender.
