History of Europe

The most professional geologist in history

Jean-Louis-Rodolphe Agassiz (1807-1873) was a Swiss naturalist, paleontologist, glaciologist, and geologist. Although Agassiz's work is manifestly contrary to the «Theory of Evolution » of Darwin , he was a pioneer in the study, and teaching methods, of the movement of glaciers and fossils.

After his death, and in recognition of his pedagogical work, Stanford University (California) erected a statue in his honor on the facade of the zoology building along with other illustrious (Johann Gutenberg, Benjamin Franklin and Alexander von Humboldt).

The shocks of the severe earthquake that shook San Francisco (1906) made the statue of Agassiz fall and "embed" itself in the ground:

Standord students commented “Agassiz's natural instinct and professionalism” that, in the middle of the earthquake, he decided to put his head under the ground to find out what was happening.
