History of Europe

The first, and only, bishop of Spain.

Much has been discussed, and there have been several different versions, about the birth of Spain as such (territorial and political unity). This idea of state or homeland for some was born with Hispania (as a province of Rome), for others with the Visigoths (with religious unification), with the Catholic Monarchs... Several opinions of the same concept, but I am going to allow myself to narrate a small enigma and then let each one «interpret» it as they want, or can.

The Visigothic world fell resoundingly in the battle of Guadalete (711) at the hands of the Muslims. In just over 20 years they were planted in Poitiers where they were defeated by Carlos Martel and, at the same time, the expansion through the rest of Europe was stopped. Shortly before the battle of Guadalete, Sinderedo, bishop of Toledo , he left for Rome – it is not known if he was self-exiling or it was already a scheduled trip -. The fact is that in 721, when the Muslims controlled almost the entire peninsula, a Council was held in Rome headed by Pope Gregory II, which Sinderedo (a bishop without a diocese) was allowed to attend.

The curious thing is that he signed the minutes of the Council as "Bishop of Spain" .

It makes me think that…
