The first pope who went alone to the bathroom

I don't know if he will be the worst, but surely one of the worst trades in history... Groom of the Stool , which could be translated as the feces waiter (the cleaner). His work consisted of cleaning the private parts of the monarch after defecating and, although it may seem strange, the fact that one of his members occupied such a distinguished task was a source of dispute between the families of the nobles. Sharing such intimate moments came to turn the butt-cleaner into a royal confidant and, in some cases, personal secretaries to the king. One of the most famous Groom of the Stool was Sir Henry Norris , which he held during the reign of Henry VIII of England. So involved was he in the palace intrigues that he was accused of adultery with Anne Boleyn and beheaded.

Logically, occupying the throne of Saint Peter meant having one of these officials (Knights of the bathroom in charge). ). These knights escorted the pontiffs, cleaned up the papal backyard, and disposed of holy and sacred debris. And although it may seem strange, because in the short period of time in which he was pope he continued to live with the same luxury with which he had done since he was young - son of a wealthy family -, Anastasius II he was the first pope who dared to go alone to the toilet and proceed like the rest of mortals. According to the fifteenth-century Italian historian and theologian Raffaele Maffei , the Volterrane , in the twenty-second book of the encyclopedia Commentariorum urbanum Libri octo et triginta

[…] He emptied his own entrails into the toilet.
