Toussaint Louverture liberated the nation of Haiti from French and Spanish colonial rule. Louverture was a leader of the Haitian Revolution, which began in 1791 and lasted until 1804. The revolution was successful, and Haiti declared its independence from France in 1804, becoming the first independent nation in Latin America and the second in the Americas after the United States.
