History of South America

What was the major export of southern states?

The major export of the southern states in the US was cotton. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the southern states had a dominant agricultural economy centered around the production of cotton. It was a cash crop that was in high demand internationally, especially in Europe, and brought significant economic wealth to the southern states. Cotton cultivation heavily relied on enslaved African American labor and, as a result, the expansion of cotton production was closely linked to the institution of slavery.
