* Economic ties to Britain. Many Loyalists were wealthy merchants, planters, and landowners who had close economic ties to Britain. They feared that independence from Britain would disrupt these ties and damage their livelihoods.
* Social and cultural ties to Britain. Many Loyalists had strong social and cultural ties to Britain. They identified as British subjects and were proud of their British heritage. They did not want to break these ties and become part of a new, independent nation.
* Fear of mob violence. Some Loyalists were afraid of the mob violence that occurred during the American Revolution. They feared that if the Revolution succeeded, they would be targeted by the Patriots.
Patriots:
* Desire for independence. Many Patriots were motivated by a desire for independence from Britain. They believed that the colonies should be self-governing and that they had the right to break away from Britain.
* Opposition to British policies. Many Patriots were opposed to British policies, such as the taxes imposed by the British government. They believed that these policies were unfair and that they were being treated as second-class citizens by the British government.
* Patriotism. Some Patriots were simply motivated by patriotism and a love of their country. They wanted to fight for the freedom and independence of their homeland.
