In antebellum times in the U.S., most Southern yeomen possessed at least a horse or two, some hogs, sheep or cattle, an orchard, two or three slaves—usually black males from fifteen to forty-five or fifty years of age—small tools, household furniture, and perhaps the ownership of one hundred of two hundred unimproved acres of woodland somewhere.
