History of South America

Where did you get the name dixie for southern states?

The name "Dixie" for the Southern United States is believed to have originated in the early 19th century and is thought to have come from the name of a $10 banknote issued by the Citizens' Bank of Louisiana in New Orleans. These notes featured an African American man on one side and the Roman numeral "X" (for ten) on the other side. The term "dixie" was a playful alteration of the word "dix," which was slang for ten in French, and was used by the citizens of New Orleans. Over time, the name "Dixie" became associated with the South more generally, particularly the Southern states that seceded during the American Civil War and formed the Confederate States of America.
