In the 1700s, America did not have its own national currency. Instead, a variety of foreign coins and currencies were used, including Spanish reales, British shillings, Portuguese moedas, and Dutch guilders. The most common currency in the American colonies was the Spanish real, often referred to as "pieces of eight" because each coin was worth eight reales.
