What percent of white southerners owned slaves on the eve civil war in 1860?

Only a small percentage of white southerners owned slaves on the eve of the Civil War in 1860. According to the 1860 census, approximately 25% of all white families in the South owned slaves. However, the distribution of slave ownership was skewed significantly towards wealthy individuals and families; large plantation owners made up a small portion of the population but owned most of the enslaved individuals.
