What did Sam Houston do in Tennessee?

* Served in the Tennessee militia. Houston served in the Tennessee militia during the War of 1812, and was eventually promoted to the rank of major general.

* Represented Tennessee in Congress. Houston was elected to the United States House of Representatives from Tennessee in 1823. He served for one term, but resigned in 1827 to become governor of Tennessee.

* Served as governor of Tennessee. Houston was elected governor of Tennessee in 1827. He served for two terms, but resigned in 1829 to become a senator from Texas.
