History of South America

How did events in Santo Domingo or Haiti influence American expansion?

The events in Santo Domingo and Haiti did not directly influence American expansion. The United States' decision to expand its territories was largely driven by a combination of economic, political, and ideological factors. These included the desire for resources, land, and markets, the pursuit of Manifest Destiny, the Monroe Doctrine, and the ideology of republicanism.

While the United States did have a significant presence in the Caribbean, its focus was primarily on protecting its own interests and securing strategic locations, rather than directly annexing territories. The interventions in Haiti and Santo Domingo were primarily driven by concerns over political stability and the protection of American citizens and economic interests.
