What was the unions first plan for defending south?

The Union's first plan for defending the South was called the Anaconda Plan. This plan involved blockading the Confederate coast, thereby preventing the export of cotton and the import of military supplies. The Union navy would also seize control of the Mississippi River, splitting the Confederacy in two. The Union army would then advance from the north and south, capturing Confederate territory and isolating the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia.
