History of South America

American soldiers were confused to discover that many south vietnamese people?

Many South Vietnamese people spoke French. South Vietnam was a former colony of France, and French influences remained deeply ingrained in the culture and society even after the country gained its independence in 1954. While the official language of South Vietnam was Vietnamese, French was commonly used in education, government, and even everyday conversations among educated and urban South Vietnamese. This often surprised and confused American soldiers who arrived in Vietnam expecting that Vietnamese would be primarily spoken.
