History of South America

Who was Father Jose Cavaller?

Fr. Jose Cavaller was born in Barcelona on March 17, 1891. He studied philosophy and theology in Zaragoza, Spain and was ordained on June 18, 1915.

In November 1928 he was assigned as a faculty member at the Royal and Pontifical University of Comillas where he taught courses on canon law, constitutional law, and international law.

He was an editor and contributor for the magazine Razon y Fe, where he wrote articles about political and social issues, and contributed with the creation of the Institute of Canon and Civil Law.

Fr. Jose Cavaller is recognized for his studies on natural rights, social order and the right to private property, but, above all, he is known as the founder of the Social Action Secretariat, an organism born in June 1931 as an answer to the new political circumstances following the proclamation of the II Republic. However, the social work carried out by the Social Action Secretariat was brought to an end by the Civil War.

Following the war, the Jesuits took over the Social Action Secretariat and created a new institution, The Social Justice School.

Father Jose Cavaller also participated in the foundation of the Spanish Social Sciences Institute, where he collaborated until 1956.

During the following years he was devoted to the training and formation of younger generations through spiritual retreats and conferences, and published his theological and canon studies.

He died in Sant Cugat del Valles, Barcelona on December 5th 1969.
