Where did most southerners live during the middle 1850?

Most southerners lived in rural areas during the middle 1850s. The agricultural economy of the South meant that the vast majority of its population worked on farms and plantations. In 1850, about 85% of the South's population lived in rural areas, with the remaining 15% living in cities and towns. The largest cities in the South at the time were New Orleans, Mobile, Charleston, and Richmond.
