Michel Temer

Michel Temer was the 37th President from Brazil, from August 31, 2016 to December 31, 2018.

Temer took over after the definitive removal of Dilma Rousseff, who was in the process of impeachment.

In the period between May 12 and August 31, 2016, Temer took over the Brazilian government as interim president.

On March 21, 2019, Michel Temer was arrested as part of the Lava Jato operation. However, four days later, on March 24, judge Antônio Ivan Athié ordered his release.

After this mandate was revoked, the former president decided to present himself to the Federal Police on May 9, 2019.

Biography of Michel Temer

Michel Miguel Elias Temer Lulia was born on September 23, 1940 in the city of Tietê (state of São Paulo). At the age of 75, he was the oldest person to assume the position of President of the Republic in Brazil.

Temer is the son of Lebanese Nakhoul "Miguel" Elias Temer Lulia and March Barbar Lulia, adherents of the Maronite Church (traditional in Lebanon). Temer is Catholic and was once a member of Freemasonry.

He is married to Marcela Temer (1983) since 2003. This is his third marriage.

Michel Temer has 5 children. Three daughters, from his first marriage (Luciana, Maristela and Clarissa), a son resulting from a relationship with a journalist (Eduardo) and a son with Marcela Temer (Michel Miguel Elias Temer Lulia Filho, known as Michelzinho).

Michel Temer's Professional Career

Temer graduated in Law from USP - University of São Paulo, in 1963, and received a PhD in Public Law from PUC - Pontifical Catholic University (São Paulo) in 1974.

He was a lawyer, university professor of Constitutional Law at PUC, in addition to having directed the graduate department of the same university.

He also directed the FADITU-Faculty of Law of Itu and the Brazilian Institute of Constitutional Law.

Michel Temer is also a writer and has four works published, including a book with about 120 poems.

Michel Temer's Political Career

Temer has been a member of the PMDB (Party of the Brazilian Democratic Movement) since 1981, the party in which he assumed leadership in 1995.

As a result of the party coalition, Temer was chosen to be the vice-presidential candidate of the government of Dilma Rousseff, affiliated with the PT (Workers' Party).

He was twice elected as Dilma's deputy (in 2010 and in 2014) until the political connection began to show signs of weakening.

At the end of their second term together, Temer wrote a letter to President Dilma complaining about being excluded from government decisions. The letter was publicized by the press and had a major impact on the political alliance of the two parties.

The PMDB presents a new government program. On December 2, 2015, the President of the Chamber of Deputies (Eduardo Cunha) opens an impeachment process against President Dilma and, in March 2016, the PMDB breaks with the PT.

On May 12, 2016 Temer assumed, on an interim basis, the position of President of the Republic of Brazil. On August 31, he takes office as President of the Republic of Brazil.

Government of Michel Temer

In the two years of government, Michel Temer faced a series of political and economic challenges. He was the worst rated president by Brazilians, with a 6% popularity rating.

Economy

Interest rates dropped from 14.6% in May 2016 to 8.8% per annum. In turn, inflation also decreased in the same period by 9.32%.

Unemployment

The unemployment rate in May 2016 rose from 11.3% to 13.7%. That means 13.7 million people without a job.

Federal Intervention in Rio de Janeiro

During Temer's government, the government of the state of Rio de Janeiro asked the federal government for help to solve the serious problems arising from the state's bankruptcy and social upheaval.
