History of South America

And who was Constantino Carvallo?

Perhaps he is the last educator -in all the extension of the word- of the 20-21 century. His ideas revolutionized teaching to the point of being considered a kind of countercultural agent, amid the self-imposed parameters of custom, closed indoctrination, and little creativity. His teaching methods, enhanced by his training in philosophy, allowed him to launch a private school, Los Reyes Rojos Barranco, and position it as one of the most open and experimental, from the point of view that it offered training based on listening to children, making them think, play and have fun, teaching humanism, in an environment that privileged -and still favors memory, note systems, quantitative assessment of results. Also associated with the world of soccer, he contributed to the recovery of the self-esteem of the Alianza Lima , one of the most popular teams in the country, helping in the formation of its modern idols, after the tragic plane crash that took an entire generation of young promises in 1987. Today our character is Constantino Carvallo :

“The voice of the teacher, its tone, its texture, its rhythm, says more than the words themselves and opens or closes the complicated path to the heart of another ”, words of Constantino Carvallo , promoter of an unconventional education, who has always emphasized that the role of the teacher goes beyond teaching a class.

Constantino Raúl Carvallo Rey was born in Lima in 1953. He worked as a film critic in the magazines Oiga and Hablemos de cine, and in the newspaper El Sol. He was an exceptional educator, who, due to his different way of seeing education, in 1978 founded the The Red Kings , where he developed a program so that low-income players from the minor divisions of Club Alianza Lima had the opportunity to study at his school.

Paolo Guerrero and Jefferson Farfán, two Peruvian soccer players who are very successful abroad, were his students at this school and have expressed, on more than one occasion, their gratitude and recognition to Professor Carvallo, who guided them during their school years.

For him, the school should be “a space for socialization in which the character of the individual and the citizen is forged. Moral autonomy and the critical search for knowledge are the fundamental goals that guide his actions.”
This educator with convictions was a leader of the Alliance club for more than 10 years and also studied philosophy at the Pontifical Catholic University of the Peru. Likewise, he was the winner of the first prize in the contest organized by the Institute of Legal Defense, the Catholic University and the University of Huamanga with his essay entitled The eyes of the crows .

he contributed to the design of the National Education Project (PEN), developed for more than three years by the National Education Council (CNE). He also founded the Héroes del Pacifico school in the district of Chorrillos.
The Ministry of Education awarded him the Palmas Magisteriales , in the Degree of Amauta posthumously, for sharing his vision of how to educate through his school Los Reyes Rojos , located on Av. Grau, the main artery of the traditional district of Barranco.

he was convinced that each student was a separate universe, with their own decisions and points of view, which deserve special and personalized attention. For him, pedagogy and educational theory are valuable but limited.

The teacher is a professional who knows his trade, but when faced with unusual problems he has to react with innovative responses. In Carvallo's words:“Every day he has his desire and that is even more true in teaching. That is why it is so easy to fall into fatigue and, sometimes, into discouragement. There is no method, there is no system, the good teacher has no doctrine. The difficult work of his is, like Lacan's psychoanalysis:A singular permanent adventure”.

Among his works stand out: Love and Education , Educar Journal , Where morality dwells and Seventh Moon .

he died in Lima on August 18, 2008, at the age of 55.
