Why did Spain give Christopher Columbus a ship to sail?

Spain did not give Christopher Columbus a ship to sail for his first voyage to the Americas. Instead, he had to convince the royalty and the nobility to support his expedition, which was considered a highly risky and expensive venture. After several rejections, he finally secured funding from the Spanish Crown, which agreed to provide him with three ships: the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María.
