History of Oceania

How did the arawaks move from one island to other?

The Arawaks used canoes and rafts: The Arawaks were skilled navigators and used a variety of canoes and rafts to travel between islands. These vessels were made from hollowed-out tree trunks or lashed-together logs and were powered by paddles or sails. The Arawaks were able to travel long distances across the open sea and were known to have made voyages of up to several thousand kilometres.

They relied on the stars and ocean currents: To successfully travel between islands, the Arawaks relied on their knowledge of the stars and ocean currents. They developed a sophisticated system of navigation based on the positions of the stars, the moon, and the sun. They also used their understanding of ocean currents to help them travel in the desired direction.

They had a vast knowledge of the winds: The winds were an important and often unpredictable factor in Arawak navigation. To successfully travel between islands, the Arawaks had to have a deep understanding of the wind patterns and how they could use them to their advantage. They developed techniques to predict wind changes and used these to plan their voyages.
