Who was Kunta Kinte?

Kunta Kinte was a Mandinka warrior who was kidnapped from his village in The Gambia and sold into slavery in the United States. He is the protagonist of the 1976 novel Roots, written by Alex Haley, and its 1977 television miniseries adaptation.

Kinte was born in 1750 in the village of Juffure, in what is now The Gambia. He was the son of a blacksmith and was raised in a traditional Mandinka household. In 1767, Kinte was captured by a group of slave traders and taken to the coast, where he was sold to a British slave ship.

The ship carrying Kinte and the other slaves arrived in Annapolis, Maryland, in 1768. Kinte was then sold to a Virginia plantation owner named John Waller, who renamed him "Toby". Kinte spent the next 12 years enslaved on Waller's plantation. He repeatedly tried to escape, but he was always recaptured.

In 1775, Kinte led a group of slaves in a successful escape from Waller's plantation. The slaves traveled north and eventually reached freedom in the British colony of Nova Scotia.
