Who financed Hernan expeditions?

The Spanish crown financed Hernan Cortes's expeditions to Mexico. Cortes initially funded the first expedition personally and secured loans from wealthy private individuals.

After a disagreement with the governor of Cuba, Diego Velázquez, who had commissioned him, the Spanish Crown authorized an investigation and appointed Cortes governor and captain-general in 1522 (Cortes had assumed those titles upon landing on mainland Mexico), legalizing his conquest.
