Mansa Musa, who reigned Mali in West Africa from 1312-1337 was considered one of the wealthiest people in history. Known as the "Lion of Mali", his empire flourished through trade, particularly in gold and salt. Ibn Fadl, a traveller from Morocco who visited Mali in the 14th century, described Mansa Musa's extravagant pilgrimage to Mecca in 1324, during which he and his entourage displayed an opulent procession of wealth, generosity and luxury.
