Why two countries divided the middle east into after World War 2?

It was not two countries that divided the Middle East after World War II, but rather the United Kingdom and France, the two colonial powers that had controlled much of the region prior to the war. Following the Ottoman Empire's collapse in World War I, the UK and France had been granted mandates by the League of Nations to administer various territories in the Middle East. After World War II, these mandates were transformed into independent states, largely along the borders that had been drawn up by the UK and France. As a result, many Middle Eastern countries today have borders that reflect the colonial divisions of the past, rather than natural geographic or ethnic boundaries.
