The conflict of World War 2 did not result in a lasting peace. Although the war ended with the unconditional surrender of the Axis powers and the creation of the United Nations to promote peace and prevent future wars, tensions between the Soviet Union and its allies and the Western Allies quickly emerged, leading to the start of the Cold War, which lasted for several decades.
