What is Oysters Rockefeller?

Oysters Rockefeller is a culinary dish consisting of oysters baked with a rich sauce of breadcrumbs, butter, herbs and various other ingredients, such as chopped spinach, shallots, parsley, tarragon, garlic and cayenne pepper. It is typically garnished with crumbled bacon and melted cheese. The dish was invented in the late 19th century at a New Orleans restaurant and is named after the wealthy American industrialist and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, who was known to be particularly fond of it.
